The characters in Trails into Reverie are some of the most well-developed and complex in the series. Rean, the protagonist, is a former student of Thors Military Academy, who has become disillusioned with the strict rules and regulations of the academy. He is joined by a diverse cast of characters, including Van Helsing, his childhood friend and rival; Elaine, the enigmatic and powerful; and many others.

The gameplay in Trails into Reverie is similar to previous games in the series, with a few new twists.
